Kanpur, March 6 Two youths tried to commit suicide by consuming a poisonous substance after failing to pay back a loan. One of them, Arvind Kumar (22) died on way. Sandeep Kumar has been admitted in the hospital in a critical condition.

A case has been registered against the money-lender, Roopa Kumari, who is absconding since the incident.

Arvind and Sandeep, daily-wage workers and residents of Lohia Nagar in Auraiya, had taken loans of around Rs 10,000 from Roopa Kumari, said officers at the Diniyapur police station.

She used to harass them and even got them beaten up for the payment of dues.

Sandeep’s father Rajesh Chak said most villagers have taken loans from Roopa Kumari, who terrorises them through hired goons. She even charged her own son double interest.

Station House Officer Hoshiyar Singh said efforts were on to arrest her.
