Surat The police, on Thursday, arrested two youths involved in mobile phone snatching. The police also nabbed two more youths involved in the gang and seized 33 mobile phones, worth Rs 49,000.

Police officers said that the two youths, Maya Shaikh (19) and Imran Shaikh (20), both residents of Navsari bazaar in Surat, were intercepted by the police at Udhna Darwaja Cross Roads on Wednesday evening. The duo were detained and interrogated after they failed to provide proper documents of the Activa scooter they were travelling in.

The interrogation led to the recovery of 10 mobile phones, worth Rs 4,500, they had hidden in the scooter's dickey.

Upon strict interrogation, both Maya and Imran broke down and confessed that they had stolen the mobile phones. Later they were arrested by the police.

The police said that the accused had stolen 33 more mobile phones in the last six months and had sold it to one Rahim Shaikh, a resident of Kotsafil Road and one Sarfarz Juneja, owner of a mobile phone shop in the Bhagatalao area of Surat. Both Rahim and Sarfaraz were later arrested by the police, who also recovered 23 mobile phones, worth Rs 44,500, which were sold by the duo.

Khatodara police inspector M R Chawda said: "The modus operandi of the accused is similar to that of the gang involved in chain snatching. Imran and Maya used to snatch mobile phones from people who were spotted standing and talking on their phones. They even confessed that in some cases, they stole the mobile phones from the pockets of people, while riding the scooter. With the help of Rahim, the duo sold the mobile phones to Sarfaraz Sheikh at Rs. 1000 per instrument and distributed the money among them.”
