Kolkata The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday added two sections of the UAPA — sections 16 and 17 that relate to terrorist and subversive activities — in its FIR in the Jnaneswari train derailment case.

“Since the CBI investigation has found that terrorist and subversive activities took place on the track leading to the derailment, we added the UAPA sections to the case,” said Partho Tapaswi, CBI lawyer.

The central agency also produced the three persons arrested in the case, including Heeralal Mahato who was arrested on Monday night, in a local court which sent them to 10 days CBI custody.

The other two arrested in the case are Khagen and Sameer Mahato.

While the CBI maintained that Heeralal is 18 years old and a key conspirator, his counsel said he is 17 and studies in Class IX at Manikpara High School.

“He was picked up from his house on June 7 at Rasua and is a teenager. He was never involved in the case,” said Kaushik Sinha, counsel of Heeralal.

Incidentally, both Heeralal and Bapi Mahato — the prime accused in the case who is still absconding — studied at the same school.

Bodies of two brothers found
The police on Tuesday recovered bullet-ridden bodies of two brothers from Chakadoba village in Belpahari in West Midnapore. The victims have been identified as Sambhu Singh Sardar (46) and Sunil Singh Sardar (38), residents of Chakadoba village in Belpahari. According to a senior police officer of the Belpahari police station, Sambhu and Sunil were active members of the PCAPA. “We have been told by witnesses that around 20-25 armed men came and stormed into their house. At around 9 pm, they picked up the brothers and moved from the place,” said the officer. Police said, “After the group dragged the two at least 200 meters away from their residence, they tied their hands and threw them in a pond. Then they fired at them.” The police have recovered four empty cartridges of .303 rifles and four posters from the spot. The posters stated that the duo was punished as they were CPM cadres and acting as police informers.

13 held entering Lalgarh forests
The police arrested 13 persons — all residents of Jangalmahal area — who were part of a group of 70 people consisting members of Asssociaton for Protection of Democratic Rights and journalists when they tried to enter a forest tract near Pirakata in Lalgarh on Tuesday. According to the police, the arrested have links with Maoists. The group was earlier detained by the security forces for verification. Manoj Verma, SP (West Midnapore) said the police had prior information of the group comprising rights’ activists and students of Jadavpur University trying to enter Pirakata forest. “So they were picked up and taken to Salboni police station to verify their credentials,” he added.
