Murder undertrial Sajid Mirza's Obama painting carries the title "Asha No Kiran Obama, Atank no Ant Obama ane Pragati No Sarthi Obama."
In fact, this is one of the 150 paintings made by Mirza during his stay in the Surat sub-jail for the last seven years.
The 32-year-old Mirza has even donated his paintings to jail officials and the prisoners who were freed during his stay in the jail. Some of his paintings can be seen in the dining rooms of the houses of jail officials as well as the walls of the Surat sub-jail.
While his colleagues in the jail watched the inauguration ceremony of the US President, Mirza decided to paint the great moment. Obama dressed in a black suit in Mirza's painting can be seen taking the oath along with his wife.
Mirza says that through the title of the painting he wants to convey the message that Obama will fight against terrorism and bring back the lost glory of the dollar.
Taking to Newsline, Mirza said, "Painting is my hobby and I had won the first prize in a painting competition held during my school days. The painting that won me the prize was that of Jawaharlal Nehru."
"Initially, it was difficult for me to pursue my hobby in jail. However, after getting permission from the jailor, I started putting my feelings on canvas," he said.
Mirza said he was keen to put Obama on canvas as he looked humble and down to earth and made great speeches.
"I am not sure when I will be able to fulfil my dream of organising an exhibition of my paintings in Surat," says Mirza.
Surat sub-jail Jailor Mukesh Doshi said, "I often find Mirza busy with his paintings. He wants to make a career as a painter after he is released from the jail."
He said Mirza had expressed his desire to make a painting of Obama's oath ceremony and so he gave him the newspaper clippings carrying the pictures of the event.
