Kolkata Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was greeted with a demonstration by the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital Employees and Public Health Safety and Security Samanay Committee, a Trinamool-backed organisation, at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) today.

The minister went to CMCH and Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNMI) before meeting officials of the state health department. After the visit, Azad admitted that the progress of the construction work of the new academic wing at CMCH was not satisfactory. He said that the problems with the contractors had led to the delay in the work.

He said that he had spoken to the contractors and inquired into the reasons for the delay. The work was scheduled to have been completed by March this year and he said that nearly 80 per cent of the work has been completed.

The minister was accompanied by Minister of State for Health Dinesh Trivedi and State Health Minister Surya Kanta Misra.

Inaugurating the medical oncology ward at the CNMI, he said that it was his first visit to the hospital and that a new campus was expected to come up to cater to the entire population of the eastern states.

“The land has already been identified where the new campus will be set up. A committee will be set up to look into the matter,” said Azad.
