Unique Fin Corp robbery case: One more arrested

Pune, January 2 The Chatuhshrungi police arrested a ninth person in the Unique Fin Corp case, on Tuesday. Chandrakanth Gulabrao Helkar (59), a resident of Sinhagad Road, who allegedly broke into the company’s office premises on Prabhat Road and made off with Rs 2.5 crores has been remanded to police custody till January 8.

On August 22, the Income Tax officials had raided the residence of the prime accused in the case, Premchand Kamble, and at the same time Fin Corp’s manager in Pune and another accused in case, Santosh Shinde had transported five boxes of Rs 50 lakh each to the Prabhat Road flat, which he revealed to the police during interrogation.

After investigation, the police found that the watchman of the building had seen a car halting in the wee hours of August 26 and five people who had alighted from it. The watchman had also noted the number of the car which the police tracked down through the RTO.

After further investigation, the police had questioned car owner Sagar Dattatre Sangle (23), who revealed that Helkar had approached him that night requesting him to loan his car. Helkar’s driver Prakash Narsinhrao also told the police that Helkar had told him to replicate the keys to the lock.

After taking the boxes from the flat Helkar paid the rent for the car and left. The police had eventually reached Helkar’s residence only to find that he had gone to Phaltan with his son. In the interim, he had also applied for anticipatory bail, which was rejected and he was finally nabbed by the police. The police had sought his custody to interrogate him about the whereabouts of the money as well as the other accomplices in the crime.
