Ludhiana With the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) reducing the ferrying charges of sludge (industrial waste), the Ludhiana Electroplaters’ Association has urged electroplating units in the city to clear the stored sludge lying in their units since 1994.

The association removes sludge from industries and sends it to Nimbua near Dera Bassi, where a common effluent treatment plant, is located.

Though the plant is operational since the last one year, but small units were not sending their stored sludge owing high charges imposed by PPCB.

Now, the charges have been reduced from Rs 10,000 to Rs 1,000 (one-time charges) for all members of the electroplating society and Rs 2,500 for the non-members to get the sludge removed from their units. The sludge will be transported till Focal Point, Phase 8, from where a common vehicle will ferry the waste to Dera Bassi.

Joginder Kumar, president of the association, said: “PPCB has authorised the association to remove sludge from the city units. The transportation, treatment of sludge and landfilling charges will also be made, but that will be quoted by the Nimbua authorities. This way, the industries will get rid of their stored hazardous waste, which they could not dispose of till date.”
