Patiala, January 8 With the buses running on Delhi-Amritsar highway making it a habit of stopping and some parking to take a break, near Sirhind-Patiala traffic lights, the commuters on the road find the passage almost always blocked. The presence of traffic police personnel in the area has been of no consequence as they do nothing to ensure a smooth flow of traffic there. All they do is to ensure that the passing VIP vehicles do not face any problem.

The area has virtually become a major bus stand. In addition to the buses and taxis stopping right in the middle of the road, a lot of roadside stalls have also come up upon encroached land further compounding the chaos.

“It’s been some time that I opened this tea shop. It is only a temporary structure, so there is no need of any permission for it,” said Ram Bhai who runs a tea stall in the area. Another stall owner, Bhau echoed the same idea.

A traffic police personnel deputed at the place to clear the traffic, said passengers on their way to Ambala, Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mohali and other nearby villages take their buses from this spot. “It is not often that traffic jams take place,” he told the Newsline.

The officials of National Highway Authority of India, which maintains the highway, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. The Fatehgarh Sahib administration officials, however, said they will look into the matter. “We will surely see if anything can be done in this regard,” said senior officials.
