Lucknow, February 16 Under the banner of United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA), five former chief ministers will be in the state on Monday to participate in a rally, presenting themselves as a strong alternative to the UPA in the coming parliamentary elections.

Apart from former UP CM Mulayam Singh Yadav, Chandrababu Naidu, Farooq Abdulla, Om Prakash Chautala and Babu Lal Marandi — the former chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Jharkhand respectively — will gather at Etawah, the Samajwadi Party chief’s hometown.

Being referred as the ‘Viraat Kisaan Rally’ (mega farmers’ rally), this will be the first major event of UNPA in the state after the Assembly elections. Samajwadi Party has made largescale arrangements to make the rally a success — chartered planes have been arranged for transporting the leaders directly from New Delhi to Saifai airstrip.

At present, all senior SP leaders, including Yadav, are camping at Etawah to supervise the arrangements. Leaflets with pictures of all prominent UNPA leaders have also been distributed in the surrounding areas.

An SP source said, “The event will be considered as a declaration of SP’s preparation for the Lok Sabha elections, besides UNPA’s attack on the Centre.”
