Kolkata Academic activities at Rabindra Bharati University were disrupted for a second consecutive day on Friday due to students’ unrest on the campus. The trouble started on Thursday when a girl studying in BA (Hons) second year alleged that she had been molested by a fellow student.

A police complaint was registered with Sinthi Police Station but the incident has assumed political colours. The girl is reportedly a Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) supporter while the accused is a Students Federation of India (SFI) leader.

On Thursday night TMCP supporters gheraoed the vice-chancellor and local police officials, demanding action against the accused student leader. “Due to the student unrest, academic activities at the university were disturbed on Friday. I did not go to the university during the day but came to know that form-filling and examinations were also disrupted,” said Rabindra Bharati University Vice-Chancellor Karuna Sindhu Das. He assured that an enquiry would be conducted into the matter.

Examinations for some Masters programmes had to be suspended. University authorities said that a meeting would be held with student representatives on Monday.

Meanwhile, TMCP alleged that academic activities “had deliberately been closed” so that the issue could be buried without taking any action on the girls complaint. But the SFI refuted the charge.
