UP boxers take title, Delhi four golds

Noida, February 8 Pugilists from Uttar Pradesh walked away with top honours, claiming the overall team title in the senior men’s Central Zone boxing tournament held under the aegis of the Uttar Pradesh Amateur Boxing Association. The winning team also collected a prize money of Rs 25,000.

Players from Uttarakhand, mainly comprising men from the Army, took home the runners-up trophy.

UP’s Abhishek Shah, winner of the title in the 51kg category and Jasbir Singh from Delhi, who got gold medal in the 81kg category, were declared best boxers of the competition.

The Delhi team also picked up four gold and two silver medals in the competition which saw as many as 66 participants in the fray.

To boost the morale of the players, the organisers also gave cash incentives to winners and runners-up in all the weight categories.

In the three-day competition that concluded late last night, apart from UP, other participating states included Uttarakhand, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh.
