UP Hostel in women’s hockey semis

Lucknow UP Hostel team defeated Pepsu squad by 2-0 in its last league encounter to secure a berth in the semi-finals of the 22nd All India Invitation Prize Money Women’s Hockey Tournament 2008-’09 being held at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium, here. Both the goals for UP Hostel were netted by forward Vandana Kataria--- in the 21st and 54th minute of the play. Gwalior Academy, Northern Railway and SAI Lucknow have also qualified for the last four stage of the tournament.

The match between SAI Lucknow and Haryana XI proved to be real thriller in which the former emerged champions 1-0. No goals could be played for a major portion of the play despite some good attempts by both the sides due to an equally good defence exhibited by both the teams. However, Kamla Rawat of SAI made no mistake in capitalising on a penalty corner (PC) awarded to her team in the 62nd minute to score the all-important goal for her team.

Western Railway defeated East Central Railway 5-1 in the last league encounter on Tuesday. Asima broke the ice in the very seventh minute of the play. In the 42nd minute,Tho Ranjita succeeded in consolidating the lead further. However, dodging past defenders skilfully, Suman Minz managed to decrease the margin in the 56th minute. After that Western Railway netted three more goals, the goal-getters being skipper Cho Sanggai (58th minute through PC), Asima (60th minute through PC) and Prakash Choudhry (69th minute).

Five league stage matches were played on Monday too. In the first match UP Hostel beat Gujarat XI 4-0. All the goals were scored through penalty corners. The goal-scorers being— Sweta Vishwakarma, Vandana Kataria, Deepika Sharma and Rashmi Singh. In the second match, SAI Lucknow beat East Central Railway, Dhanbad 4-1. On behalf of SAI, Kamla Rawat netted two goals while skipper Shraddha Verma and Pratibha Choudhry netted apiece each. Suman Minz was the goal-getter for East Central Railway, Dhanbad. In the third match, Central Railway beat RCF Kapurthala 2-1. Karuna and Usha Singh found the target on behalf of Central Railway while Sukhmanjit Kaur found the target for RCF Kapurthala in the 40th minute. Pritam Siwatch blasted two goals while skipper Balwinder Kaur struck apiece as Northern Railway beat West Central Railway, Jabalpur 3-1. The goal for West Central Railway was netted by its captain Harjinder Kaur.

An all-important goal by A Soreng in the 55th minute through penalty corner helped NER Gorakhpur in defeating Pepsu, Punjab by 1-0 in the last match played on Monday.

Wednesday’s Fixtures (both semi-finals): UP Hostel vs Gwalior Academy (at 1.00 pm); Northern Railway vs SAI Lucknow (at 3.00 pm).
