UPCC gears up to hold rallies to thank UPA

The Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) had been demanding the central government to consider loan waiver for drought-stricken Bundelkhand farmers in the state. Now, when their demand has been met in the Union Budget, the Congress is ready to carry the message to the villagers.

The party will hold ‘abhaar’ (appreciation) rallies in all districts before Holi to thank AICC chief Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

An elated UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi said, “After the loan waiver, soon there will be a special package for Bundelkhand and eastern UP.” This, according to Joshi, is different from what Chief Minister Mayawati has been asking for. “She has asked for a hefty amount (Rs 80,000 crore), which we find impractical. The package we have asked for does not specify any amount but focuses on assistance in various sectors namely development, employment, drinking water, irrigation, industries and education,” said Joshi.

For the last six months, Congress was carrying out demonstrations to build pressure on the central government for loan waiver. “Now, party workers will go to the rural areas to make the people aware of the new provisions and then ensure that they get the benefits,” she said.
