When 17-year-old city golfer Rahul Bakshi did not take part in the ongoing All India Amateur Championship being held at Kolkata, most of the golf fans were surprised at the young golfer's decision. But not many know that the young Chandigarh golfer has now set his eyes on studying in United States of America and is hoping to play in the US domestic college circuit.
"I am very keen on studying in United States. I just received my SAT score and it is 1950 out of 2400. With my achievements in golf too, I hope I will get a scholarship in a good American University. America has got one of the world's best domestic circuit and I hope to play for my University team which will be a huge boost for me," says the young golfer who was also in Indian team for junior World Cup last February and also got an invite to Volvo Masters of Asia in December last year. Bakshi has been India's top rated amateur golfer over the last few years and also plays for Oil India Limited in the PSPB Inter-Unit Golf Championship. Bakshi also made it to the headlines when he won in the U-18 category in the Nick Faldo Series Finals in October last year and believes that Jeev Milkha Singh has been a huge inspiration in his life. "The last time Jeev came to Chandigarh, he was talking about the importance of gaining exposure in a country like US where domestic circuit sees the participation of world's top rated young golfers. He also studied in an American University and counts that experience as most valuable in his life. I hope I will be able to do even ten percent of what Jeev did during his college days," says Bakshi, who is now preparing hard for his board exams. The young golfer also counts his experience as an amateur golfer as the best so far and rates his All India Amateur title win in Chandigarh in January last year as his best so far. "Playing in the amateur circuit has of course helped me a lot as I got a chance to play in various conditions all over India apart from countries likes Thailand and Indonesia. There are plenty of tournaments happening in the amateur circuit this season and I hope young golfers will gain a lot from such tournaments," says Bakshi who was one of five Indians in the Volvo Masters of Asia Open last December.
