Kolkata, January 8 An 11-member delegation of US renewable energy companies, led by US assistant secretary for market access and compliance David Bohigian, will be in the city from January 13 to 15 to explore joint ventures locally as part of the entrepreneurship development symposium.

Various companies, which have the technologies for producing energy from waste, solar rays or biomass, will interact with local companies for investment opportunities.

“This trade mission is part of the Asia Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, a key initiative for both India and the United States. We are working closely with the West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency (WBREDA) for this event,” said Henry V Jardine, US Consul General, on Tuesday.

While the names of the companies have not been disclosed, senior officials at the Centre told The Indian Express that the US assistant secretary will hold a series of meetings with government agencies, officials and power companies operating in the region.

The meetings are expected to take place with senior officials of the WBREDA, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited, Calcutta Electricity Supply Company, Confederation of Indian Industry, American Chamber of Commerce and Indo-American Chamber of Commerce.

Meanwhile, the city will also play host to the first-ever Kolkata-US entrepreneurship symposium on 14 and 15 January. The symposium is being organised by The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) in association with Kauffman Foundation and Department of Commerce, USA at the International Trade Administration.

“In the US, centres of excellence, federal and private sectors, have all worked. This helped in creation of big names like Apple, Oracle and Microsoft. In India, we have not been able to convert too many ideas into success stories,” said Shoummo K Acharya, President, Kolkata Chapter, TiE, at the American Center on Tuesday.

As another measure to strengthen commercial relations with the city, the US commercial service will be putting up a US pavilion at the upcoming International Mining Exploration (IME) show, scheduled to take place between January 17 and 20. L&H (re-builder of mining equipment and engineer) and Flanders Electric are expected participants at the pavilion.
