In a panel discussion and an interactive session on “The US and the New Presidency: Expectations and Challenges”, Osius spoke about the changes that might be ushered in by the new government and the changes that might affect its foreign policy with India.
“There is a lot of speculation about the new government, especially since today is his first day in office. But I believe no matter whosoever is in the office, he will continue the economic-political strategic relationship that the two countries share. US is looking for every opportunity to give this strategic relationship a boost,” said Osius. Continuing the trend of the past 10 years, he said the US had a stake in India providing leadership to the world.
Osius also spoke about America’s war on terror and the recent co-operation between the FBI and Indian intelligence agencies after the Mumbai terror attacks, something that had never been seen before. “The President had elaborated in his speech that after 9/11, terrorism cannot be limited within borders and oceans. He has promised to defend terrorism and has also stressed on the importance of sharing information and taking joint action against the terrorists,” said Osius.
With Obama already issuing orders to close down the infamous Guantanamo Bay, something that was seen as a symbol of American excesses, he said that the new President would also begin the movement of withdrawing from Iraq responsibility.
