The UT Architecture department has already prepared the drawings of the three underpasses around the university campus. underpasses or subways, similar to the one under the Sector 17-22 dividing road near ISBT, are being planned been planned for the road dividing Sector 14 and Sector 25 (connecting the two PU campuses) and between Sector 12 and 14 (connecting PU Gate number 1 with the PGI gate) and Sector 12 and 15 (connecting PU Gate number 2 with Sector 15 market).
Gate number 1 of the university is particularly congested because a number of patients get off at the university gate to go to PGI which is across the road.
UT Chief Architect Sunita Monga said, “The demand for creating such an underpass has been coming from the university authorities and we have already prepared the drawings to study the feasibility of the project. Adding ramps on both sides of the subways is a tedious process as the roads are congested. Once plans and drawings are considered, estimates will be prepared accordingly”.
There is also a plan to connect the parking lot of Sukhna Lake with its entry to keep the surface road from being clogged with pedestrians. The project has been assigned to Chandigarh College of Architecture and will be examined by the Engineering Department of the administration.
Chandigarh’s experience with pedestrian underpasses has not been very encouraging as the one near ISBT-17 has not been put to full use.
According to the original plan for Chandigarh, creation of underpasses was envisaged as Stage III of road network and traffic management.
