A first-of-its kind in the region, the centre has a unique method to empower the children — by imparting training in professional skills according to one’s aptitude in computers, electrical and electronics repair/assembling services, beauty services, cutting, tailoring and embroidery, motor mechanic, carpentry, food processing or dress designing.
While interacting with the members of various NGOs, General Rodrigues said that the third phase of the project will be completed by March 31, making it completely functional to accommodate 900 children (600 boys and 300 girls). The first phase of the project was inaugurated by the Administrator on October 27 last year.
The Administrator and his wife, Jean Rodrigues, met the residents and distributed gifts and food packets.
He also laid the foundation stone of an IT block and auditorium at the Government College for Girls in Sector 42, being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.81 and Rs 2.11 crore respectively. The IT block will have the provision of a computer lab, skill lab, video lab, classrooms and other facilities while the auditorium will have a capacity to accommodate 575 people.
