Chandigarh UT Administrator General S F Rodrigues (Retd) today ordered an internal inquiry into the ‘poor’ handling of an anti-encroachment drive, which was undertaken to demolish an alleged illegal construction adjoining the Sector-38 (West) gurdwara on January 30.

Taking stern note of the altercation between the Administration staff and the residents during the drive, General Rodrigues summoned Inspector General of Police S K Jain and Senior Superintendent of Police S S Srivastava during the public-hearing session and asked them to provide complete details of the episode.

Stating that rules are paramount, the Administrator directed officers to adhere to the law and curb any violations with respect to encroachment of government land. “Different enforcement agencies should work in close coordination and quickly respond to the situation as a team,” he said.

Accompanied by his wife Jean, General Rodrigues gave a patient hearing to all individuals who aired their grievances. Reacting to the demands of the Footpath Cycle Workers’ Union, General Rodrigues asked the Finance Secretary and Municipal Corporation Commissioner to explore the possibility of constructing small kiosks for these service providers in different sectors.

General Rodrigues also took serious note of the issue of non-payment of dues to safai karamcharis of Government Medical College and Hospital.
