Chandigarh Keeping in view the dwindling sex ratio in the region, the UT Education department is all set to sensitise students about the issue through various activities. The department plans to organise seminars and rope in NGOs to create awareness.

Talking to Newsline, Director Public Instructions (Schools) Samwartak Singh said: “Taking account of the seriousness of the evil of female foeticide, the department has decided to catch them young. Values like respect for the other gender should be inculcated in children at a very young age. We will organise lectures in schools signifying the need for a balanced sex ratio.”

The department says it is also essential to empower girls to stand for what they feel is right. For the purpose, girls will be counselled about taking a stand for their rights. According to information, the department has also tied up with the Child and Woman Welfare Department to create awareness against the social evil.

“Youngsters should be sensitised about the harmful effects of female foeticide and how it is going to impact the coming generations,” said Singh.

He added that schools had also been instructed to incorporate the issue in the curriculum.

For this, painting competitions, debates and declamations will be held in schools as part of the extra-curricular activities.
