Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations and post the Mumbai terror attacks, the UT police have tightened the reins on foreigners in the city. In fact, hotels have been directed to keep the guests’ passports till they finally check out. A photocopy of the passports will also be submitted to the police, who will verify its authenticity with the embassy concerned.

Requisite identity proof has been made mandatory to use Internet facilities at five-star hotels, said a police officer. Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras have also been installed at a majority of the city hotels.

“With Republic Day approaching, we are not taking any chances. Such security checks are necessary to oversee the entry of illegal migrants or terrorists in the city,” said Inspector General of Police S K Jain.

Hotel owners have welcomed the step. “Even the guests don’t mind depositing their passports with us as they too are concerned for their security. We will fully cooperate with the police,” said Manmohan S Kohli, owner of Aroma Hotel, Sector 22.
