Chandigarh, February 22 The Chandigarh administration has proposed to make a special scheme for allotment of sites for the use of godowns and warehouses and its allied activities.

The scheme would be first of its kind, as the city does not have any specific scheme for earmarking land for godowns and warehouses. Significantly, no provision has been made in the actual plan of the city for warehousing and godowns, which are essential for storage of bulk materials including consumer goods, food items, building materials, etc. Under the proposed scheme, an area of land would be separately earmarked for godowns.

However, keeping in view the limitation of land, officials say that preference would be given to those who are the residents of Chandigarh and are involved in this trade.

Provisions will also be made for requirements of Public Sector Undertakings of the Centre, Punjab and Haryana. The policy would allot such sites on leasehold basis. The sites of godowns will be planned and will include major facilities for parking, toilets, other civic amenities and facilities for workers. The scheme is also expected to ease out unnecessary movement of trucks and heavy vehicles within the city and industrial areas.
