Mumbai, February 13 “Every year, I go out with my boyfriend to celebrate Valentine’s Day. However, this year, I am planning to drop any outing in view of the ongoing political turmoil. Places like Band stand and Carter Road in Bandra are the places where couples usually get targeted. Though I have never myself been a victim of such harassment, I don't want to take any chances this year,” says Sherryl Fernandes (21) when asked about her plans for Valentine’s Day. And she is not the only one feeling this way. Couples across the city are reluctant to risk the wrath of the anti-Valentine’s Day groups.

But there are those who have decided to go ahead with their plans, even if it means celebrating the day indoors. Ryan Correa, an event manager says, “The only difference between the celebrations that might happen this year is that they will be indoors with a minimum of fanfare. Big places like hotels and pubs along with advertisers and Valentine’s Day event sponsors, might suffer, but this will surely not dampen the mood of couples across the city. Many couples have decided to spend their Valentine’s Day indoors and in a discreet manner without attracting the attention of any party, spreading the word either by e-mails or word of mouth.”

Kumar Padavi, who owns the Boat Club in Bandra, does not feel threatened by the annual anti-Valentine sentiments. “These people who go on wreaking havoc at places where couples meet to celebrate Valentine’s Day usually operate in the mornings and afternoons. Late evenings are pretty much safer with little trouble. Besides, the crowd that we get on Valentine’s Day is usually the yuppie professionals in their mid- to late 20s or family members coming to have a good time. I don’t think there will be any trouble at my establishment.”

Additional Commissioner of Police Archana Tyagi (West Region) said, “Because of the arrests made on Tuesday, we are aware that the situation could deserve more police attention and arrangements are being made in this regard at places like Bandra people generally frequent to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We take such steps every year and this year will be no different.”

Security, the new gift
Celebrating the Valentine’s Day just got safer. For, some couples have added another item to the list of gifts-security.
According to Deepak Monga from the security group Topsline, “This year, we have seen this unique phenomenon of youths gifting paid memberships of our security services to their beloved. In the last few days, more than 500 couples from Mumbai alone have applied for our memberships (wherein they have to pay an annual fee for a helpline number that they can contact in case of emergencies) as gifts to their Valentines this year.”
He adds: “I guess couples have realised that the best gift to give each other is safety, considering that the city is going through a tense phase.”
