New Delhi Vani Kapoor nearly walked away with the winners trophy at last week’s Army Open golf championship, but an important positive she managed to take from the tournament was a lower handicap, down to -1. She continued to play fine golf in the first round of the 54-hole Ladies Northern India amateur golf championship which started on Tuesday at the Delhi Golf Club. Vani shot a one-under 71, the first sub-par round of this prestigious tourney, and was followed by Shreya Ghei in second place, three strokes behind. Close behind is Ankita Tiwana on 75.

On 76, All India champion Gurbani Singh on 76 had a disapointing round from her point of view, and another played who will feel that she could have done better was Gauri Monga, who turned in a 6-over par 78. Defending champion Neha Tripathi, another -1 handicapper, will have to make a miraculous fightback to defend her title with today’s score of 85, which places her joint ninth. Vani had 4 birdies, but a double bogey on the third hole proved expensive.

In the junior girls trophy being played concurrently, Vani Kapoor and Shreya Ghei are the leaders in Category A. In Category B for those aged 13-14 years, Gurbani Singh is in front, while Aditi Ashok leads Category C, and is followed by Ridhima Dilawari on 88.

In the senior golfers playing for the Sita Rawlley prize on the Lodhi Course, Mary Bhattacharya is the leader with 91, followed by Anjali Nagpal on 93.
