Kolkata Kelebabu, one of the accused in the Vedic Village arson case at Rajarhat in North 24-Parganas, was shot dead by three motorcycle-borne miscreants at Haroa in North 24-Parganas around 7 pm, district officials said.

“His name was not in the FIR. However, in due course of investigation we found out his involvement in the murder after the football match in the Vedic Village resort. He was arrested and chargesheeted but granted bail on December 8. The miscreants fired at him and fled away. We are looking into the matter,” said North 24-Parganas SP Rahul Srivastava.

According to a senior official, police were trying to make him a witness in the case against the Vedic Village MD Raj Kishore Modi. “Apparently, Kelebabu was murdered to suppress some evidence that could help the investigators. We were interrogating him in the case and he gave information,” said an official.

On August 23, 2009 one person was killed inside Vedic Village, a prime resort in the city at Rajarhat, which then turned into a battlefield after a football match.

The residents of the village were evacuated after offices inside the premises were set ablaze.

Raj Kishore Modi, MD, Vedic Village resort, manager Biplab Biswas and Gaffar Mollah, the prime accused in the case, were arrested. The investigation is on.
