Chandigarh Traders of the grain market and the vegetable market in Sector 26 have decided to go on a strike from Wednesday. The decision was taken after a meeting between the Joint Action Committee of traders and UT Administration officials.

The dharna in front of the Market Committee Office, meanwhile, continued on the second day. The traders are protesting against the setting up of checkposts in the market and have also received support from various political parties.

In a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, the traders said laying barriers in the area without prior notice was affecting trade. If the system of checkpost at the entry points has to be followed, it should be implemented in the proposed new wholesale market rather than the existing ones.

The members of the market committee also held a meeting to discuss their further course of action. It was decided that the committee will spend around Rs 3 crore to improve infrastructure in the market. The members unanimously agreed that since the revenue given to the Administration increased by Rs 22 lakh in the previous year, there was no discrepancy anywhere.

The Administration, however, maintained that there are discrepancies in revenue collection.
