Chandigarh, March 5 With the change in weather, the prices of vegetables are on the rise. The rates of seasonal veggies are showing an increase of Rs 15 to 20. Tomatoes, which were priced at Rs 20 just last week, have increased to Rs 25. The same goes for other veggies including ladyfingers, capsicum, etc. As rates differ from vendors to vendor, consumers are the ones left confused.

The Budget has impacted the price of pulses and edible oil as well. The worst hit is rice, the price of which has risen by around 70 per cent. Last month, the price of basmati rice was Rs 30 per kg, which stands at Rs 60 per kg now. The price of edible oil has increased from Rs 55 to Rs 70 a litre. Even the price per kg of wheat has risen by Re 1.

Traders blame the price-hike on the low yield (owing to the extreme cold) this year. Talking to Newsline, Jagdish Kumar, one of the traders in Sector 26, said: “The prices have risen because there is low supply and more demand. Moreover, the supply from the east was also hindered resulting in the price-hike.”
