Ghaziabad Thousands of people from Khurram village of Moradnagar blocked the National Highway-58 disrupting traffic for a few hours.

They were protesting against the law and order situation in the district after their 28-year-old village chief, Anurag alias Pintoo Tyagi, was shot dead by four unknown assailants on Sunday around 11 am.

According to the police, Pintoo who had cases of murder and attempt to murder registered against him in the local police station, was shot soon after he left his home on a motorcycle.

He had got married just a year-and-a-half ago and his wife was expecting a child.

The newly-appointed SP (Rural), K K Asthana said, “When Pintoo reached Jalalpur road, unknown assailants pumped bullets into him. The farmers in the nearby fields heard the shots and rushed to his help.”

“He was rushed to the district hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” added Asthana.

“There was a dispute in Pintoo’s family over 50 bighas of land. This may have led to the murder. Pintoo’s father was also murdered a few years ago. We are looking at the possibility of contract or revenge killing as there are murder cases registered against him,” said a senior police officer.
