Kolkata The villagers killed three persons at a Trinamool Congress meeting in the remote village of Nabagram near Lavpur in Birbhum district late Thursday night.

Another person, Jamal Sekh, was left seriously injured and has been shifted to Burdwan Medical College, said SP (Birbhum) R N Mukherjee.

According to the police Manirul Sekh, a local Trinamool leader, had called a party meeting at Nabagram, which was attended by the locals. The three brothers — Turuk Sekh, Patul Sekh and Vanu Sekh — was also present at the meeting with Jamal when they were attacked by the villagers with iron rod and sticks. All the three once belonged to the Trinamool camp but they left the party to join the CPM. Two months ago, they returned to Trinamool, said police.

Mukherjee said it was not clear what actually happened. When the police reached the village, they found that male members of the village had escaped. A police picket has been set up there, said Mukherjee.
