Surat Workers of Larsen & Toubro Company at Hazira went on a rampage following the death of a casual labourer in an accident at the company premises on Wednesday morning.

According to sources, two casual labourers, identified as Ajay Yadav (23) and Rambahadur Ramgani (24), accidentally fell down from the deck while they were working in the company’s modular fabrication facility department.

They were rushed to a nearby hospital where Ajay Yadav, a resident of Mora village in Surat, was declared dead on arrival. Rambahadur is still critical and has been shifted to the Pramukh Swami Hospital in Rander.

When the labourers demanded compensation and payment towards the medical expenses on behalf of the victims from the contractor, he refused to do so and asked them to put up

their demand before the company authorities.

At this, the labourers resorted to violence and damaged offices, 20-odd cars and a security guard office besides injuring four policemen who had rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. The company authorities refused to comment on the situation.

The angry labourers also targeted the police mobile van and assaulted police staff with wooden sticks.

Additional police force from Rander and Ichhapore was rushed to the spot immediately to control the situation. The police had to resort to lathi charge to disperse the mob.

A complaint of assault on police has been lodged with the Ichhapore police station as well as a complaint about the death of labourer Ajay Yadav. Following this incident, the operations of the company remained closed for the whole day on Wednesday.

The three of the four injured police personnel have been identified as Assistant Sub Inspectors Kashinath Supdu, Prakash Patil and Hemant Tandel. The injured policemen have been admitted to a private hospital

at Ichhapore. Police inspector B M Ambegaokar of Ichhapore police station is carrying out the investigation into the incident.
