Surat Violence erupted at the ABG Shipyard Company at Magdalla in Surat after a worker was killed by a speeding hydraulic crane in the company premises on Tuesday afternoon. The police said Sukh Narayan (25) was leaving for lunch when the incident occurred.

The news spread like wildfire and around 2,000 workers ransacked the administrative offices and vehicles, and the company officials had to inform the police.

The Umra police rushed to the spot and tried to talk to the workers, but to no avail. The police then fired four teargas shells and resorted to a baton charge to bring the situation under control, in the process injuring some workers.

Narayan’s body was sent to the New Civil Hospital for postmortem. Two complaints, one of accidental death by the family members of the deceased, and one by the company against the 1,500 workers, were lodged at the Umra police station.

Associate Vice-President, HR & Corporate Office Subhash Ghantayat, said: “We still don’t know why the workers became angry and damaged the company property. We have lodged a complaint in this connection and the police will investigate in the case. We have found that some wrong message was passed on to the workers, which might have driven them to take law into their own hands. Sukh was serving in our company for the last three years.”
