Vadodara Virsinh Babhor and wife, Madhi, are people “in demand” in Gujarat. They were in the national capital on Republic Day after the President of India invited one couple from each of the states to participate in the cultural programme and interact with various visiting dignitaries. However, Babhor, the sarpanch of Amlodh village in Dahod district, was the cynosure with his 80-feet long turban.

According to him, President Pratibha Patil presented the couple with a medal and certificate for representing the uniqueness of Gujarat as an ideal couple. For the 67-year-old Babhor, meeting the President and several other dignitaries was a dream-come-true experience. “I always wanted to visit the capital since childhood. I couldn’t believe it when I got the invitation from the President,” said Babhor who has two sons and a daughter.

The couple visited significant places in New Delhi from January 26 to January 30. They also attended several cultural functions and met other couples from different states of India. “The couple from Haryana were really pleased with my turban,” he said.

They also visited Mahatma Gandhi’s Samadhi at Raj Ghat. “It was like a pilgrimage for me,” said Babhor, adding that apart from the cold in Delhi, he and his wife had a great time in the city.
