New Delhi As Sania Mirza tried to see exactly how fit she was during her short practice stint at the DLTA Complex under the watchful eyes of Jatin Chaudhry, the physiotherapist was also observing her practice partner Vivek Shokeen, who has also been consulting him. The Delhi tennis player has not played in a tournament since a Futures event in Chandigarh in April 2008, but is now looking forward to getting back on the circuit.

“I had a cyst in my right wrist, but I didn’t know exactly what it was till I made Jatin take a look at it. Sania gave me his number the last time she was in Delhi to see him, and so I gave him a call,” said the right-hander.

Once touted as a bright prospect when he was a junior, Shokeen’s powerful forehand in particular had been noticed as his main strength, but now he is concentrating on regenerating the same power.

“Jatin was very helpful, and I have been hitting on the courts for two months now. At one point I thought I won’t play again, but I’m glad to be back. It was tough not to play for so long. Now the injury is fine, but my shots are a bit weak, so I need to work on that,” he said.

Chaudhry, too, appears to be happy with the progress the 21-year-old has made. “He is fine now, but needs to do some strengthening exercises. I’ve had around 15 sessions with him,” said Chaudhry. Shokeen heads to Florida to train at the Nick Bolletieri Tennis Academy for a month — as part of the All India Tennis Association Commonwealth Games programme — and he hopes the visit will help as he begins the road to recovery. After he returns, Shokeen will be playing two Futures tournaments in India.
