Two days after the incident occurred, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) began a count of the dilapidated and danger prone buildings in the city. The town development department has now been asked to carry out a fresh survey in VMC's twelve administrative wards to detect such constructions where large basements are being built.
The most danger-prone region remains the old city area. According to a preliminary estimate, there are around 95 old buildings, which have been issued notices to remove or demolish their newly built portions.
VMC Commissioner M K Das said, “The town development department has also been instructed to look for such constructions where problem is apparent, and inform its structural engineer to take all precautions and make it a zero problem site.”
North Zone region of the VMC, which comprises parts of the old city area and Karelibaugh has the highest number (45) of such buildings followed by East Zone (39), the predominantly old city area. South Zone has just ten such odd buildings while West Zone has only one old trust building, which is likely to face demolition soon.
West Zone executive engineer F J Charpot said, “We got one complaint of a trust building in Bhimnath Bridge area, which is very old. It has the District Collector as its trustee. The demolition application is under process and will be carried out soon.”
The prime reason that the old city area has the maximum number of such structures is because most of the buildings there are old and constructed using wooden beams and materials.
North Zone executive engineer Mukund Patel said, “In ward no. 5, there are 53 such structures mainly in Shiyabaug, Bakrawdi, Dandia Bazaar and the Rajmahal Road area, while there are around 10 such structures in ward no. 10 covering Nagarwada and Salatwada areas. All of them have been served notices to demolish the dangerous portions, which is mostly danger-prone during the monsoon.”
South Zone executive engineer Dhiren Talpada said, “We have around ten (such) buildings, located in the Wadi and other surrounding areas.”
In ward no. 2-B, four buildings, including one opposite Popular Bakery in Warsia, have been served notices, while ward no. 1-A has 35 such structures where residents have been alerted, said Rajesh Chauhan, executive engineer.
