The money will be used to develop a 20 Million Litres per Day (MLD) Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Chhani. The detailed project report was presented before the top officials at Delhi and it was sanctioned on Friday.
VMC officials said the sewage at Chhani and Sama will be treated and utilised as drinking water by adopting the STP. “The main pumping station will be developed at Chhani at a cost of Rs 14 crore and there will be eight auxiliary pumping stations at Kalali, Chhani, Makarpura, Sama, Manek Park near the airport and the Post and Telegraph Colony,” said Jignesh Shah, Deputy Executive Engineer, JNNURM projects.
The VMC had earlier received the green signal from the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL) to source 300 MLD water by 2035. At a meeting in Gandhinagar a few months ago, it was decided to supply water to the city in two phases; 160 MLD till 2025, with the remainder by 2035.
Shah added: “The project involves a 27 km-long gravity line and a 14 km-long pressure line which will supply water in Gayatri nagar, Chhani, Kapurai and Harni. It will cover 86 per cent in terms of area and 96 per cent in terms of population.”
