Surat The four-day religious function of Christians, which was to be held at Chikhalda village in Vyara taluka of Tapi district from Thursday, was cancelled at the eleventh hour. The cancellation came after Vyara BJP president Chandu Gamit challenged the event in the court of law alleging conversion.

A Christian group at the village had made all the arrangements for the event. Posters had also been pasted in different villages in Vyara. The arrangements were made to accommodate over 10,000 people.

Gamit had filed a suit before the Vyara civil court contending that tribals are converted through such functions. After this, the court ordered a stay.

Earlier, Chikhalda deputy sarpanch Kamlesh Gamit, along with a few supporters, went to the district collector’s office and handed over a memorandum to the official demanding that such functions should not take place.

The sarpanch alleged that in such functions, the organisers convert tribals through black magic and other activities.
