Vyas admits to 19 deaths caused by Hepatitis B

Ahmedabad State Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas has admitted on the floor of the state Assembly that as many as 19 people have died of Hepatitis B in the villages surrounding Modasa in Sabarkantha district in the last one week.

He said that as many as 224 medical teams have visited nearly 227 villages and screened over 1.50 lakh people for Hepatitis B.

Responding to a question, Vyas said, 459 people had been administered injections; 1,883 people underwent operations, 152 people had taken dental treatment, and 25 people had undergone blood transfusion in the area.

He said a total of 70 patients, including 37 indoor, who are suffering from suspected Hepatitis B, have been identified.

He also informed the House about the steps being taken by the government to create awareness about the precautionary measures to be taken against the disease. Handbills have been distributed and hoardings have been put up, he said, adding that two ventilators and an Eliza Blood Testing machine has been made available at the Modasa Public Health Centre.

Regarding the cause of the dreaded disease, he said the National Institute of Communicable diseases had tested a few blood samples and found that it was caused by acute Hepatitis B.
