Ahmedabad Gujarat Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas on Friday refuted allegations that the state government was callous in its approach while dealing with the Hepatitis B outbreak. “About 5.5 lakh people and two lakh households were surveyed. But the real effect will be known only in 90 days. About 71,000 people have been vaccinated in the affected areas,” he said. He admitted that the medical device manufactures had approached the government since last year for the introduction of auto-disabled (AD) syringes. He said: “The die for making AD syringes is very costly. So, the price difference between AD and disposable syringes prevented us from buying the former.”

He refuted media reports about Gujarat being the only state which doesn’t use AD syringes, and lags in the usage of disposable ones. “No other state apparatus in the country betters than Gujarat,” he claimed. Regarding the fate of doctors arrested on charges on medical malpractices, he said, “The law will take its own course.”
