Pune Top seed and local lad Arjun Kadhe was made to work hard for a victory by less fancied opponent AK Pardhasardhi of Karnataka. The unseeded player played the match of his life but Kadhe's experience paid off in the end.

Pardhasardhi, who won the first set and led 4-1 in the second, looked the favourite to win the match. But some gutsy tennis from Kadhe saw him claw back to 4-4 and eventually win in the tie break (7-4). From that point on, he took an early lead in the third set and closed it at 6-3. The final score read 2-6,7-6 (4), 6-3 and it lasted for just under two hours.

There were three upsets in the boys section with the seventh seed Manish Kumar being outclassed by Rajanvir Singh Dharni (Mah) 6-2, 6-1. Wild card entrant Tarun Nath (Hyd) beat his state-mate SK Mukund, 16th seed, 6-2, 6-3 and 14th seed Anvit Bendrey went down in straight sets to Karan Salwan of Delhi. Third seed Tushal Thawani, second seed Vinod Gowda, fourth seed Shaikh Abdullah and fifth seed Vilassier Khate comfortably advanced to the pre quarterfinals.

In the girls section, all the 16 seeds had a first round bye and were not in action on Tuesday. The notable winners were Moulika Ram of AP, who beat the talented Bharati Bylapudi of Mumbai 6-3, 7-5. Seeulee Upadhyaya (Orissa) beat Amreen Shaikh 6-1, 7-5 while in the battle between two MBTA girls; Snehadevi Reddy crushed Dhruti Venugopal of Karnataka 6-1, 6-0. Local girls Avanee Gosavi also advanced to the second round with a comfortable 6-2, 6-1 win over Kajal Naukariya, also of Maharashtra.

The match of the day in the girls section was between Lavanya Sarvanan (TN) and Isha Gandhi (Chattisgarh). Lavanya won the match in 3 close sets 7-5,5-7,6-3 in a 2.25 hour match.
