Punjab Governor and UT Administrator General S F Rodrigues (Retd), his wife Jean Rodrigues and GOC-in-C, Western Command Lt Gen T K Sapru, along with several retired Army officers, laid wreaths on the memorial decorated with flowers. The armed forces contingent sounded the last post and reversed arms.

Defence personnel along with officials of the UT Administration and others from different walks of life were also present. After the wreath-laying ceremony, a two-minute silence was observed in the memory of the martyrs and also Mahatma Gandhi, who was killed on this day 61 years ago.

Chief of Staff, HQ, Lt Gen A N Aul, Home Secretary Ram Niwas, Deputy Commissioner R K Rao and senior officers of Western Command and UT Administration were among the prominent people present on the occasion.

In the evening, hundreds of residents and senior defence officials assembled at the memorial to light candles. As the sun set, numerous candles shimmered at the memorial. Students from Shivalik Public School, St Annes Convent School, Army School and Army Law Institute were also present in large numbers.
