Kolkata The state-run SSKM Hospital has dismissed a ward employee and recommended action against two doctors in a case of medical negligence in which a 94-year-woman admitted for fractures in her left leg was allegedly given traction in the wrong leg.

A week after the family of Promila Devi, the victim, lodged a complaint with the hospital, the five-member in-house inquiry team found the doctors guilty prima facie.

A resident of Kasba in south Kolkata, Promila was admitted to Woodburn ward at PG Hospital after she fell down while coming out of her bathroom and broke her leg. X-Ray reports showed she had broken her left leg.

However, when her relatives came to check on her, they allegedly found out that the traction was applied on the wrong leg.

Promila’s son Rupayan Dey, who is an official of the state human rights department, lodged a complaint of medical negligence with the hospital authorities and a separate complaint with the local police station.

Following the complaint, hospital superintendent Ashok Ghosh set up an inquiry team headed by the orthopedic department chief and asked him to submit a report soon.

On the basis of the inquiry report, Surojit Kundu, a ward staff, was dismissed from service while the complaint against a junior doctor, Parag Garg, has been sent to the appropriate authorities. The senior doctor in-charge, Samir Gupta, is likely to be relieved of some of his responsibilities.

“Medical negligence is inexcusable in the field of healthcare,” said a senior doctor of SSKM Hospital.
