Kolkata Having arrived a day ago as part of his first visit to Kolkata, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, on Friday referred to West Bengal as the ‘intellectual powerhouse’ of the country.

“I am clear that West Bengal continues to be the intellectual powerhouse of India,” he said.

As the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for International Trade, Andrew expressed concern over the environmental impact of global warming over Sunderbans. “The threat (of global warning) will resonate strongly in this part of India, in particular with the low-lying Sunderbans delta,” said Andew.

Addressing the representatives of the business community at a seminar on “UK-India Business partnership: Low carbon Economy’ organised by the Confedertaion of Indian Industry (CII) and British Deputy High Commission, the Prince said that trade between two countries was worth 12.6 billion pounds last year and India was one the biggest inward investors in UK and UK is the European investor to India.

Andrew said the transition to low carbon companies is creating business opportunities and UK is one of the most preferred markets for such products.

“Many of the new generation of low carbon companies have been born directly out of university research, operating at a forefront of nano-technology, bio technology and computer science,” he said. The Prince also took a boat ride today and visited an old ship construction company in the city.

“I took an early morning boat ride on the Hooghly this morning while on a visit to Garden Reach ship-builders, which is being modernised by British assistance,” said Andrew.

Intellectual Power house by ujjal pal on 13 Mar 2010

It's our consolation that no body including the NEW Yorker gentleman dares accuse 'the intellctual power house of India" of environmental pollution due to industraialition,as here idustries have stopped coming up long since in aticipation that they would pollute environment leading to global warming.Isn't it the fall-out of intellectual thinking?Prince, thanks for the compliment.

An Ignorant Duke and his knowledge of world! by hritaG on 13 Mar 2010

it's stupid to see foreign delegates unaware of anything just commented loosely- parroting the lines served by their hosts. Duke of York has anything substantial behind his remark "WB 'intellectual powerhouse' of India"? what does WB intellectuals has done in recent -say last 30years- time to India's development? DoY himself as ignorant as one could be just wanted to please his hosts. Of course WB intellectuals are proactive in last 2/3 years to provide every support to Maoists who engaged in mass killing of innocent people. No country would tolerate such acts of its intellectuals. Indian politicians are never concerned of the state so these intellectuals run havoc through Maoists. Yes Mr. ignorant Duke of York said as his knowledge of world!

U proved that u represent the least intellectual part of india by Subhashis Dey on 14 Mar 2010

Who are you judge WB? You can say a line or two against the Duke but you have no right to degrade WB. Learn to disagree without being disagreeable. I would love to know which part of the Country is the "intellectual powerhouse" according to you?
