Chandigarh The new academic session at PGI kicked off on Wednesday with an address by Professor N K Ganguly, adviser to the Minister of Health and Family Welfare as well as a distinguished biotechnology fellow.

Speaking on the ‘Changing scenario of health system and health research in India’, Professor Ganguly motivated the new students to keep the PGI flag flying high.

“We have to take medicine to the doorstep of the common man ending its compartmentalisation. The new genetics have shown that medicine can be personalised as each individual/community has its own specific problems,” he added.

PGI Director Professor K K Talwar also addressed the students and said, “In today’s highly competitive world, a premier institute like PGIMER cannot rest on its past laurels. In order to move with the times, we have to constantly widen our intellectual horizons by looking forward to new opportunities and strengthening our infrastructure. We must develop new models for management of diseases and translate them into solutions for the ailing humanity.”

Seventy eight candidates have joined the MD/MS course of major specialties such as anesthesia, medicine, nuclear medicine, gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry, orthosurgery, radio diagnosis, general surgery, microbiology and pathology while 31 students have joined the DM in cardiology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery, plastic surgery, urology and surgical gastroenterology.
