Chandigarh, February 4 The president of the Shiromani Akali Dal Sukhbir Singh Badal attended the birth centenary celebrations of Bhagat Singh at the PU law auditorium on Monday. He talked about the need to build youth power through education and scientific temper. The function was organised jointly by Panjab University Teachers’ Association and Panjab University Campus Students Council.

Sukhbir asked the PU V-C to request the PM to release nearly Rs 100 crore to correct the current financial crisis faced by the varsity. He also urged the state and central governments to dedicate the birth centenary of Bhagat Singh to the youth. He dwelt on the importance of sports in chanellising the energies of the youngsters for constructive purposes.

A portrait of Bhagat Singh was also garlanded at the function. Prof Jagmohan Singh, secretary, Association for Democratic Rights, and nephew of Bhagat Singh, delivered the keynote address. Prof Singh spoke about the revolutionary spirit exhibited by Bhagat Singh and his associates.

The PU V-C Prof R C Sobti highlighted the pivotal role played by the varsity in safeguarding and promoting values of Punjabi culture. Prof A S Ahluwalia, PUTA president and PUTA secretary, Prof Manjit Singh also spoke at the function.

Members of the student council were also present at the function.

Meanwhile, members of Students Organisation of India (SOI) facilitated Sukhbir Badal at the Students’ centre.
