Chandigarh, March 3 Yesterday: Kavita, the daughter of an UT police constable, committed suicide a day before her 17th birthday. Exam pressure was the reported reason behind her taking the extreme step.

Last week: 16-year-old Vineeta, resident of Daria, consumed phenyl after her mother scolded her for getting a haircut! The girl got the new hairstyle in anticipation of her school's farewell party.

Last month: Aditya, a Class X student, committed suicide reportedly after his mother scolded him for squandering away tuition money. An engineering student and Sector-10 resident, Onam, hung herself allegedly after her father objected to her demands of increased pocket money.

These incidents bring to light the increasing fragility of the teenage mind and the imperative need to tackle the phenomenon at a war footing.

According to police records, 82 incidents of suicides were reported in Chandigarh last year of which 22 were women. Ten of the deceased were students.

The situation is no better this year. On an average, a suicide is reported every fourth day.
