It was the concrete wilderness of the Big Apple that led 28-year-old Niyeti Chadha Kannal (in the picture) to experiment with spatial lines in her first solo exhibition. Vaporous landscapes, clean corners and the enormity of space describe the collages and 40 drawings in pen and pencil, which are on display at Art Konsult, Hauz Khas Village, till March 10.

Dressed in a brown kurta on the day of the opening, the New York-based artist defended her choice of opting for drawings as a medium. She said, “For me drawing is a requirement. It’s not that I can’t do acrylics and oils. I am not comfortable with the canvas.”

An untitled seven ft by seven ft drawing depicted her encounters with shades of black and white. “The surrounding and people of New York have seeped into my work,” said Kannal, an alumni of MS University, Baroda.

Artist Seema Kohli gushed over the creations, as she stated, “It shows the maturation of the artist from brilliant and methodical to deeper, lyrical, and less predictable.” The curator for the exhibition and owner of Art Konsult, Bhavan Kakar, observed, “The works have a very niche audience and a commercial value.” Price tag? Rs 9,000 to Rs 70,000.
