Pune, January 2 At a time when the city police has embarked on a traffic safety week and is holding seminars and workshops across the city, the least one would expect is that the law enforcers themselves would be seen following the law.

That was not to be on Wednesday morning when the official car of Commissioner of Pune Police Jayant Umranikar was found parked in front of the “No Parking” signage right outside the Traffic Control Branch, Pune City.

Umranikar had come to the Traffic Control Branch to inaugurate the mobile traffic awareness exhibition specially designed as a part of the traffic safety week.

As soon his car (MH 01 BA 1026) reached the traffic branch, Umranikar rushed inside to greet the guests, while his driver parked the car right in front of the `no parking’ board and stepped out of the car. Soon one more car (MH 12 AH 7023) belonging to another senior police officer pulled up behind Umranikar’s car and also parked there.

The senior police officers then participated in the inauguration programme where young school students were seen depicting the see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil postures. They also had placards of ‘traffic education’, ‘traffic enforcement’ and ‘traffic engineering’ hanging from their necks.

Umranikar, who inaugurated the mobile exhibition in a Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) bus, also addressed reporters and said: “Only self discipline can solve the traffic problem.”

He, along with Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahesh Ghurye (traffic branch) and other senior police officers also interacted with traffic and environmental activists.

“Government should increase the fine for traffic violations. Also the regional transport office should start blacklisting the people who are violating the traffic rules and cancel the driving license of those who are violating the norms often,” Umranikar suggested.

While the interaction was going on Umranikar’s driver drove the car inside the premises of traffic control branch. By then, the car had been parked in the no parking zone for over 20 minutes.

While Umranikar was not available for comment, Ghurye said there was no evidence of the police officers violating the parking norms. When his attention was drawn to photographs of police cars in front of the ‘No Parking’ signage, Ghurye said, “Photographs can be manipulated.”
