New Delhi Delhi woke up to a thick fog cover and icy cold winds on the first day of the New Year. Though the mercury dipped to a tolerable minimum of 8.5 degrees Celsius, up by 0.3 degrees from Wednesday and one degree above normal, windy conditions ensured the winter chill was in place.

This was, however, a “warm” New Year’s Day, compared to last year, when the minimum temperature was recorded at 2.6 degrees Celsius.

A thick cover of fog reduced the normal visibility range to 50 metres and it stayed that way till 11 am. “The fog persisted today despite the strong winds, which is an unusual condition for Delhi, making it chillier even though a considerably higher temperature was recorded. Visibility conditions were affected till 11 am due to this,” a senior official of the Met Department said.

The weatherman predicts foggy conditions will persist for the next couple of days but with a “progressive decrease” in intensity and duration. The Met department forecast says the maximum and minimum temperatures for tomorrow will be around 18 and eight degrees Celsius. The National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting predicts it will be 22 and seven degrees respectively in the next five days.

The season’s lowest temperature of 6.4 degrees Celsius was recorded on December 26. Compared to last December, it is warmer this time, with the minimum temperature hovering above five degrees Celsius.

36 trains cancelled

With thick fog persisting, trains continue to be delayed and cancelled. Around 36 trains under Northern Railways were cancelled on Thursday, while 17 were rescheduled. The worst hit were morning trains, which include most of the Rajdhanis. Most trains were delayed by one to eight hours. Sources said the delay would continue for a while due to the weather.
