Gurgaon While Kangra police arrested the four medical students whose ragging allegedly led to the death of first-year student Aman Satya Kachroo, back in Gurgaon the teenager’s father wished the family had foreseen the tragedy and pulled him out of college when he had first told them about ragging.

“His friends tell us Aman was ashamed and humiliated because of the ragging,” father Rajender Kachroo said, adding that his son and 14 fellow students of Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College in Tanda, Himachal Pradesh, had reported about ragging by seniors to the college administration and local police. The youths had also written to the health minister, Kachroo senior said. “But no action was taken.”

The teenager had died on Sunday night in a hospital near his college due to severe injuries, after being allegedly ragged and beaten by seniors. The postmortem report says he died of a cardiac arrest. The report also mentions several internal and external injuries. “Subjected to constant beating, Aman had a perforation in his left ear drum,” it says, highlighting the violent manhandling he had undergone.

The 19-year-old’s aunt, Indira, today said, “The college authorities had asked Aman to file a written complaint, and he did exactly that. But before any action could be initiated, the seniors, who were drunk, beat him and a few other first-year students on Sunday night.

“Aman died before he could even be administered first-aid.”

She said the family “should have withdrawn Aman from the college (after his initial complaint about ragging) to save his life”.

The youth’s uncle, Rohit Dhar, who lives close by in Gurgaon, also alleged that there was delay in providing medical attention to Aman, which might have led to the death.

Aman’s body was brought back to the family’s Sector-23 house in Gurgaon late Monday night; the cremation was done at the Capital’s Lodhi Road crematorium on Tuesday afternoon.

Aman passed out of DPS International in Delhi.

Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley, Rajender Kachroo had moved base to Tanzania many years ago — he is a university lecturer there; wife Priya is a school teacher. Their daughter Sanead is a student of engineering at Texas, USA.

Aman had joined Dr Rajender Prasad Medical College in Tanda, a small town some 20 kilometres from Kangra, in 2008.

Meanwhile, in Kangra...
* Kangra police registered case of murder under Section 302 of IPC and Section 3 of Ragging Ordinance against the four students: Ajay Verma, Naveen Verma, Mukul Sharma and Abhinav Verma
* Mukul and Abhinav surrendered in a court in Dharamshala today — they were remanded in police custody till March 16
* Ajay and Naveen remanded in police custody till March 13
* Himachal government appointed Dr Anil Chauhan as new college principal; former principal Dr S Shankhyan sent back to Forensic Medicine dept

...And in Delhi
Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam announced he would move the Supreme Court seeking exemplary action against those involved in the offence. Subramaniam was appointed as amicus curiae (friend of the court) by the apex court

Compare it withwestern campus shootings by Kalidas M on 13 Mar 2009

Nothing less than the so called campus shooting rampages we hear from the west. Same wine in Indian bottle, that's all. The college authorities are accountable as well as a general sense of carelessness prevalent everywhere in our society towards the the attrocities of some more priviledged groups. Very heinous, this one.

Ragging death by Dr Madan on 12 Mar 2009

In kerala two students were sentenced for 10 years imprisonment for ragging.Kudos to the judge!.Here it is a murder and the culprits should be hanged quickly.Courts have to get tough on capital punishment and when they get tough somehow in the end they are pardoned and that is the reason such people have no fear.Even in a highly democratic country like USA,there is capital punishment.

Medical Student death at Himachal by Paresh V on 12 Mar 2009

The Supreme Court had laid clear down guidelines to be followed by Unversities and Colleges to prevent ragging. A few colleges have adopted them. Why does the media not go to other institutes and colleges and report on whether the guidelines are being followed? While the current case of death of the medical student is ghastly, reporting about lack of action at other colleges will prevent more students suffering. The media, by concentraing only when something so ghastly has occured is ignoring similar conditions at other places, which can be prevented by better reporting. Taking active steps to prevent such occurances wuld be true tribute to the dead student.

accountability by Salaam on 11 Mar 2009

The boys who killed this kid will be totally accountable to god on the day of judgement for killing a innocent. According to Quran "killing one innocent is as if u killed the entire mankind and saving one life is as if u saved the life of entire mankind. I totally fail to understand how a human is not compassionate about another human?

Regging is a sensless crime by Dr. Paras Deo on 11 Mar 2009

Not only these perverse minded mad idiots need to be punished by the law. I am in the firm belief that the responsibility also lies with the colleges and the the college administration Every student must be made to sign an affidavit they they will not rag. Ragging is a crime. Ragging is primitive. Ragging is body and mental injury. Ragging serves no purpose at all. I remember the National Defence Academy had to change the venue of the cadets' training because of ragging. Almost every college in India has some sort of ragging. What are we? A bunch of frustrated senseless nincompoops who get a kick out of putting a junior to shame? This attitude later carries on into the adult lives where the subordinates are harassed. The India media must play a more important roll and propagate against ragging. the court must punish these freaks severely to make clear that this nonsense will not be tolerated. RAGGING IS TALEBANISATION. STOP THEM NOW !!

Nothing less than death sentence to be given to such people. Why waste tax payer's money by running cases for a long time. Instant justtice should be the order of the day. No mercy for such people.

Exemplary punishment by Cherian on 11 Mar 2009

Aman lost his life due to criminal behaviour of his own college mates. The primary responsibility to stop such a heinous crime was on the Principal and college authorities who failed in their duty. The case should be tried on fast track basis to meet out exemplary punishment to all those involved in the act, and to prevent such incidents in future. And what a shame to all these college authorities who are found to be irresponsibile in their duties to protect the life of students.

SHAME FOR POLICE AND COLLEGE AUTHORITY by shamim on 11 Mar 2009

They are not fit to joyn a noble profession as a doctor. Eve nthe college authorities should be made answerable to the public. I guess this is prevalent throughout all the colleges in India . iIt is a shame.

Ragging by Karan on 11 Mar 2009

This BS shows how intelligent our students are in india. Shame on Teachers who taught these stupids and made them book smart to get to Medical college. My dreams of india moving to 21 century fades away when I read these news. Even after 62 years of independence our stupid students have not given this scary practices and show thier cowardness in ragging. If they are so smart, intelligent and manly then do something to improve your country..... not kill people. I feel sad for the family who has lost their son. These culprits should be hanged...it was a murder

Strange by naresh on 11 Mar 2009

Strange that now one bothers to comment on the death of an innocent person but they go up in arms when something is said about some stupid, insipid topics. Strange....

Wish we had pulled him out of college’ by Ina on 11 Mar 2009

These student should be severely punished and banned from attending MEDICAL STUDIES in any of the Universities in India and anywhere abroad. What did they want to accomplish, if they did not want to save a life. A medical student is thought to save a life and not take life. They should be IMPRISONED for life. There are other who are also involved, I do not think only 4 student were involved. All the other cheering students should also be punished.

Ragging has to be fully forbidden by A.Kader on 11 Mar 2009

It is the barbarians who do ragging have to be withdrawn from the colleges. The college authorities who neglect their duties without taking immediate action against ragging should be punished too.Have they time to wait when ragging is going on? The stupid ones without brains and heart! How can they run colleges?Ragging has to be fully forbidden.

All the four offenders must be hanged.

Poor Students by vishal on 11 Mar 2009

Its shame that this kind of thing happend in India in 22nd century ...but then whom do we blame i guess the whole college and culture brewing in these colleges has to be blamed isn't it??And what kind of Media is this ..zee tv is asking its viewer to poll and blatantly coming up with conclusion that its viewers want culprit students to be hanged ???why don't we take management of TV Channels to court whose bosses can do anthing to increase their TRP and confuse common man.I am very much sure for the sake of their TRP they must have cooked their polls.Without having any details they will be the first one to announce who is culprit.??If conditions were so bad so why no action was taken by management.WERE they sleeping do they any records its only four students who use to rag and rest of them not involved at any time .they must have been given verbal or written warning or is it mere accident where in we shouldn't punish just hand picked ones .But try to change the whole Culture .

Ragging and Sadism by sp on 11 Mar 2009

A life sentence must be given to these foolish people. India has to go a long way before educational institutions can impart in to students the concept of real education. Some people justify ragging as a means to develop a bond. In reality it is a criminal behaviour and the perpetrators need psychiatric counseling. It is only in the last few years ragging has been identified as a mainstream issue, although should not forget that it existed from way back in the 70's. Perhaps this reflects the reluctance of staff and college authorities to take action as it is they may have as students in the past involved in such sadistic acts

Sorry state by Jumanak on 11 Mar 2009

Wondering who will fight these internal terrors who are targettng such innocent persons and kids. Police seem to be busy on security of politicians, actors, cricketers and their families. A normal man has to pay to get even simple justice.
