Pune With seven new languages, translations of Tukaram's abhangs by Mahatama Gandhi and paintings of the sant by various artistes in the last two hundred years, the site tukaram.com adds another dimension to the literary figure's work on his fourth birth centenary.

The website that earlier featured translations of the sant's abhangs by late Dutch poet Leo Van der Zalm and Rabindranath Tagore and also a Vishwa Kosh documenting his worldwide popularity will have the add-ons to mark his fourth birth centenary.

"We have been working on this since the last one year. Especially for the fourth centenary that falls today, we started working on the site since the first of this month. On January 24 we put up Oriya, Telugu and Malayalam translations of Nemade's monograph," said Dilip Dhonde, webmaster.

Tukara, Bhalchandra Nemade's monograph on Tukaram, has been featured in these three languages whereas the Konkani and Tamil sections feature a biography of Tukaram by the sant's tenth descendent, Shridhar More.

The devotees of the sant can now view the oldest available image of Tukaram of 1832 AD in the newly introduced art gallery. The image was a cover to a handwritten manuscript of Tukaram's abhangs belonging to a warkari, Haibatbaba Arphalkar. Also, in the gallery, one can view sketches of Tukaram drawn by Nandlal Bose. "These sketches are important because they have been drawn on Mahatma Gandhi's request in 1945 AD," said Dhonde. Tukaram on Bhandara and Tukaram and his wife Jeejaai are the two sketches by Nandalal Bose that are featured in the gallery.

The other add-on to the website are the translations of Tukaram's abhangs by Mahatama Gandhi. The copyright that opened in first week of January made things easier for Dhonde and project manager Devendra Rathe. "We were waiting for the copyright to open so that we can feature the translations on the website," said Rathe, project manager.

Translations of Tukaram that were done by Mahatma Gandhi in Yerwada Central Jail between 15-10-1930 and 28-10-1930 is the main attraction of the add-ons to the site for the sant's fourth birth centenary. "Je ka ranjale ganjale , Papachi vasana nako davoo dola, Pavitra te kul paawan to desh jethe Hariche daas janma gheti and others were translated by Gandhi during his sentence at Yerwada Central Jail. Our aim is to introduce Tukaram to more and more languages, Indian as well as foreign. This is the only way we can pay homage to the only literary Marathi figure whose works have been published in the Anthology of World Literature by Longman," said Dhonde.
